About ITIN

What is an ITIN?


An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for individuals who are required to have taxpayer identification but are not yet eligible for or do not have a Social Security Number (SSN).

Who is eligible for an ITIN?


ITINs are designed for non-resident aliens, resident aliens, their dependents, spouses, and foreign nationals who need a taxpayer identification number but do not qualify for a Social Security Number.

What to Bring to Your Appointment


The IRS requires supporting documents to prove identity and foreign status including a passport OR two supporting documents. Visit the IRS website for more information.

Note: There is a $25 ITIN application fee.

Passport

A passport is the only stand-alone document that proves both identity and foreign status.

For dependents, the passport must have a date of entry to be a stand-alone document, unless the dependent is from Canada or Mexico, or a dependent of U.S. military personnel stationed overseas.

Two Supporting Documents

If you don’t have a valid passport, you must submit two supporting documents: one to prove identity and another to prove foreign status.

One document must show your photo. Exceptions: Dependents under age 14 (or under age 18 if a student).

Documents that prove identity or foreign status:

*May be used to prove foreign status only if documents are foreign.

Documents that prove identity only:

  • U.S. driver’s license
  • U.S. military identification card
  • Foreign driver’s license
  • U.S. state identification card
